Hair Renovation Myths: Have You Been a Victim of Them?
You have probably shied away from hair renovation because of the myths associated with it. Hair renovation or transplantation is still surrounded by many myths and stigmas. This is because many people don’t know exactly what it entails. Here are 6 myths debunked and the actual realities behind them.
Read more to find out if you have been a victim of these.
Myth: Hair transplants work better in younger men
Reality: Hair transplants work better in men between age 25-65
You might think, hey I’m 20, I’m young, it’s probably better to get a hair transplant now, right? Well, you might think wrong. If young men under 25 get a hair transplant, they might have to get another one further down the road to maintain it. This is because young men might be experiencing premature hair loss which might change as they grow older. It is therefore better to look into hair transplantation once the hair loss has stabilized, meaning at an older age. Men in their fifties can still be candidates for hair transplantation, as long as they have thick, full hair on the back of the head that can be transplanted. So men in your 20’s, hold tight and wait a little, it’ll be worth it. If you’re in your fifties and sixties and balding, don’t despair, there is still a chance!
Myth: Hair transplant has an immediate result
Reality: Hair transplants take 6-12 months to start seeing results.
This one is the main myth surrounding the procedure. You’ve thought this, right? The reality is transplanted hair falls off in three weeks, but the follicle root keeps growing if there is enough blood supply. They then start growing in 60 days and the best results are seen at 9-12 months after the procedure. Bet you didn’t know that one. You’ll still get a beautiful head of hair, it will just take longer.
Myth: You will need no more hair loss treatment after a hair transplant
Reality: Hair transplant can’t prevent further hair loss.
This is a big one. Some people might experience further hair loss after hair transplantation, especially if they have conditions that cause hair loss, like alopecia, thyroid disease or hormonal imbalances, which can only be remediated by medical treatment like ointments, tablets and PRP injections. So be sure to consult your regular physician before undergoing a hair transplant.
Myth: Hair transplantation leaves a big linear scar and is long to recover from
Reality: Newer methods of hair transplantation are non-invasive and have fast recovery times
You’re probably worried about getting a hair transplant because of the huge, linear scar it leaves at the back of the head and the demanding recovery time that will make you miss weeks of work. But don’t worry, new methods of hair transplantation leave little to no scars and have fast recovery times, with some patients returning to work in a couple days. This is possible because of new robotic hair restoration systems. Robotic hair restoration systems do Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) automatically. FUE extracts a large amount of hair follicles from the back of the head one by one. The extracted follicles are then transplanted into the recipient areas.
At Boston Robotic Hair Restoration, we use the new ARTAS® iX Robotic Hair Restoration System, the most advanced, non-invasive machine for hair restoration that provides an almost immediate recovery time, leaving no traces or linear scarring.
Myth: Hair can be transplanted from anywhere in the body.
Reality: Hair transplants take hair from the back of the head only.
So no transplanting hair from your back or chest. This is because body hair has different texture and growth rate than scalp hair and the hair follicle will therefore not be viable. The roots from the back of the head are dense and are the right texture, which is why if there is no hair there a person might not be a candidate for hair transplantation.
Myth: Hair transplants are not affordable
Reality: Hair transplant cost depends on several factors
Now we’ll be honest, hair transplants are not cheap. But, they can be affordable depending on several factors. Some of these factors include how much hair you need transplanted, since the price depends on how many grafts you need and if you need it from a single area or from multiple ones. Another factor is financing. Your surgeon will most likely have a financing option available for you, so be sure to ask them beforehand.
